Things Forgotten and Remembered

It’s amazing what I had forgotten in the almost three years since Tater Tot was a newborn.

I’d forgotten

  • just how intoxicating the smell of Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Lotion is.
  • how soft a baby’s skin feels.
  • how fun it is to watch those little fat rolls start to come in!
  • the sweet smell of the top of a baby’s head.
  • that using a bulb syringe is no fun for the user or the usee  (that’s probably not even a word).
  • how fast a baby’s fingernails and toenails grow.
  • that when changing a baby boy’s diaper, you have to be ready to duck and cover.
  • how precious those little smiles and grins are when they’re sleeping.
  • that sometimes it takes a sweet forever to get a good burp to come up.
  • that babies squeak and make the sweetest noises.
  • that they should come with a sticker that reads “Slippery and squirmy when wet.”

Fortunately, no one had to remind me that Small Fry is a blessing and a gift, and I love him so fiercely that it would almost be scary if it weren’t normal to feel that way toward your children.

My newborns have frustrated me to the point of tears with the not burping thing. Ellen was the worst. I’d hand her to Andrew in the middle of the night and whisper through gritted teeth, “She WON’T burp.” He’d take her and she’d let out this huge belch. And because of that inexplicable mommy love, I didn’t throw her out the window.

I know! Aren’t they wonderful!? I’ll have to keep going back to this post as Brennan grows older. Makes you just want time to linger, doesn’t it?
