He’s Come a Long Way

Small Fry is eight months old today.  That’s 32 weeks that he’s been out here in the big old world.  Thirty-two weeks of training his people to follow his lead.  Thirty-two weeks of wondering if we’re ever going to figure it out.

Eight months is a fun age.  He’s not crawling yet, so it’s easy to keep him in one place.  The day is coming, though, so my vacuuming routine is about to triple.  He’s worth it.

Small Fry is, in general, a happy baby.  We think he’s about to spring a tooth, though.  That’s what we’re blaming a recent bout of fussiness and excessive drooling on.  Small Fry is different from his brother in a lot of ways, and when it comes to teething, you betcha.  Tater Tot fussed a little, drooled a little, and ran a little fever.  The his first tooth popped out, and after that one, there wasn’t much drama with the rest.  Small Fry’s first one is taking a sweet forever.

Like all babies, he has a wonderful laugh.  It’s kind of husky, and for lack of a better way to describe it, it rolls.  No one makes him laugh harder than Tater Tot.

Small Fry does not care for his diaper to be changed.  He squirms and rolls until you think you’ll be in the same spot with him for the rest of your life.  And getting him dressed?  It’s like trying to gift wrap a kangaroo.

His hair is finally starting to grow.  The other day he actually had enough to have his first case of bed-head.

He’s already showing signs of being highly intelligent.  When I told him that we might go to a Tennessee game to see his Daddy’s alma mater play and that he’d have to wear orange, this was his response.

However, when I told him that Mississippi State beat Ole Miss in the Egg Bowl, well…

(I can’t even tell you how happy that picture would make my Daddy, a Mississippi State man, himself.)

Small Fry is a delightful 18-pound, 25-inch whopper of an eight-month-old baby, and I can’t imagine our lives without him.

For a baby who spent his first three weeks in the NICU, he’s come a long way, baby.
